After a day of shows, I was very keen to rush down to see Whistles’ SS15 6pm presentation. I had began to wonder why the location for the event was near King’s Cross until I got there and then realised it was quite perfect. The venue was unusual but brilliant. It was set below the ground floor level, inside a narrow long tunnel which I believe is or was part of King’s Cross station. The moment I stepped on the escalator taking me down, I could see the presentation in action – with models walking along the tunnel. It was quite a view!
For the spring and summer 2015 collection the brand continues its exploration of textures, fabrics and surface. Going through the looks you can see that the shapes are influenced by sport and street-wear, refreshed using subtle palettes and sophisticated textures. Harnessing the energy of the summer, the pieces are created to be versatile for layering. Gentle palm prints work with fading florals – a combination reminiscent of beach culture.
Classic holiday materials are reconstructed. Raffia frays are inspired by sun-dried leaves from palm trees and are put together with grown-up silks. Asymmetric silhouettes feature throughout and large splits beautifully reveal the feminine body. Bags are made up of leather strips – a reminder of wooden sun-soaked slats, and shoes are stacked using cork, wood and espadrille.
