Vancouver-born designer Steven Tai looks back to the brand’s first crush: the geeky, nerdy girl who finds herself in a socially awkward situation. She feels pressured to enjoy herself on the day of obstinate happiness. We are taken into a very bright school classroom where a party is taking place. The girls find themselves struggling to really connect with fellow classmates. A cake is brought in and cut into slices. Balloons are on the walls and pieces of confetti are thrown across the room. Despite all the ingredients required to create an happy atmosphere, things remain awkward. Steven has named his spring collection: “worst day ever”.
The colour palette lemon tart and candy. Checks are seen all over. Dungarees, knee-length skirts and cropped trousers also feature. They are worn with textured, layered vests and oversize shirts. A hand-scribbled, multi-coloured print is offered as an alternative to the seasonal flowers and there is also an embroidered version made with free-floating multi-coloured yarns. I love all the checks.
