Seven Dials: a lovely hidden shopping village in Covent Garden

I really love finding coming across new areas and shops to try out. Quite recently, a PR lady got in touch with me wanting to tell me about Seven Dials which is a village in Covent Garden and one that is not too well known. It is situated north west of Covent Garden, just minutes away by foot. It is named Seven Dials because right in the centre of the area there is a circular space with a monument bearing sundials which directly connects to 7 streets.

It is home to mostly independent names made up of boutiques, stores, beauty and grooming salons – all there for customers who want a distinctive shopping experience – one which is different to your High Street. The place has its charms and because it is not too well known by the tourists, the area is reasonably quiet – making it a good escape from the madness of London’s stressful, crowded streets. The stores are quite special. For instance, a number of clothing stores are dedicated to menswear and many products are made in England. Seven Dials boasts a number of eateries and places to drink with pubs, bars and cafes all around. There are theatres and luxury hotels too.

Two delightful PR ladies took me out alone for an afternoon of treats. We first started off by having lunch at Dial Bar & Restaurant on Monmouth Street. Described as “invitingly luxurious; a classic contemporary mix of chocolate leather and aubergine velvet with deep comfy sofas to sit and watch the world go by on” – it did not disappoint. Polite, well spoken staff and great food.

I started off with some sweet cured scottish salmon, fennel and coriander salad, anise dressing.

And drank some apple martini. It was the first time I had ever tried martini!

Then for the main I had Seared sea bass fillet, parmesan risotto and a spinach and garlic cream.

I finished off with some Bitter chocolate tart, marmalade and cream for dessert.

After that long afternoon lunch filled with a very enjoyable chat, we went off to a tiny lovely store where British menswear clothing brand Albam are located. They started the company back in 2006, concentrating on producing well made basics and expanded from there on. Products now include knitwear, footwear, shorts, jeans, chinos, parkas, blazers and many of them are made right here in England – music to my ears! The Telegraph recognise their good work as Albam won the “Best for Men’s Fashion” award at their Best Small Shops in Britain Awards. It is wonderful to see a British clothing brand becoming a success.

  • I love Seven Dials! I only discovered it about a year ago, and totally by accident.

One of my favourites things about London is wandering down little side streets – you never know what you might find!
