I was invited to attend the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards at the Battersea Power Station. Can you believe it the first time I had been inside that venue? I took along Fritha Stuttard with me and was delighted to find a few of my friends there, sat at the same table where a seat was reserved under my name. The event was fantastic fun – it was the final of the modelling contest, with a full year’s modelling contract up for grabs from MOT Models. Gok Wan hosted for, I think, the fourth year running and I enjoyed seeing him in person just days after we had hosted a video chat on Google+, answering fashion questions from the public. There were many celebrities at the event – too many to count. It’s funny but I actually had trouble recognising some of them with spectacles on but then I need vision glasses myself (no I am not joking – I am short sighted). Time for me to head down to Specsavers?
Now I love parties but love them even more when they support good causes. In this particular instance, it was about supporting Kidscape. We should never underestimate the needs of bullying victims. I know through the experience of school friends that bullying can, and do destroy lives. According to NSPCC, 46% of the children claim they have been bullied, and during 2010/11 30,439 children called ChildLine about bullying. I am grateful Specsavers has backed Kidscape since 2008 through its Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition, and in that time it has raised over £50,000.
After being treated to some fun catwalk shows, the eventual winner of the Spectacle Wearer of the Year Award 2011 was Lucie Stevenson, from Falkirk, so congratulations to her! All the models were ravishingly beautiful.
