So the big sale has began. Getting to the Harrods sale early is something of a religion for me. I go every year, particularly to the winter sale. It is always brutally cold but that never stops me. This time it was different because Al-Fayed has moved on. I must confess I really do miss seeing him come out and shake hands with so many of his customers – something he always used to do. Aside from that, it was pretty much a typical Harrods launch: a fine brass band performing for the the crowd + photographers busy grabbing crucial photos and a number of camera crews from all around the world interviewing those waiting to grab heavily discounted designer goods. Jerry Hall and her daughter, Lizzy Jagger both looked excited to be there. You can see Lizzy do an excited little bounce as she walked along the red carpet in my video below. It was cute.

The queues stretched all the way around the entire building and went even further back. I love seeing this. It wouldn’t be the same without them.
Video showing the queues:
Inside, huge numbers of women battled their way to secure their purchases of designer handbags – Miu Miu and Gucci were extremely popular. The bags were flying off the shelves and I saw many women holding 5-6 bags to buy! Men stayed away from the area although I did spot a some husbands standing around patiently holding the items to be purchased while the ladies browsed the floor, grabbing whatever they could get. The demand for parfums were incredible. That section of the store actually came to a standstill simply because so many people wanted to grab hold of them. The men’s sections were also madly busy – particularly the shoe section. I have to say, Harrods’s staff were just wonderful. Impeccable manners with a genuine smile, eager to assist you despite the stressful sale environment they had to deal with. This is how every store employee should be.
