Earlier in the summer, I was given the ever so tiny PowerShot N by Canon to play with. I love gadgets and I love photography so this was perfect for me. The PowerShot N is so small that it is about the size of my palm and can easily fit into tiny spaces – like the pocket or purse! One notable feature is its WiFi function, which I was very excited to try out and works very well. You can download a free app for iPhone, Android phones and even the iPad. Using the PowerShot N’s built in WiFi you can view the images on your phone and iPad, and download images. It takes 2 seconds to download each one – that is speedy! You do not need an internet connection to do it. It has an 8x optical zoom and can record videos in full HD (1080p).
Canon arranged for an evening meal out with a guest, so that I could take some snaps from the evening. I needed a guest and I thought of doing something a tad bit outrageous which was to ask on Twitter whether anyone wanted to go out for a meal with me. Amazingly I had a few replies within minutes and the woman I chose to be my guest is also a blogger and her name is Lucie! I looked at her blog (a beautiful blog it is too) and concluded she was unlikely to be an axe murderer, so it was not only a safe choice but she came across as a very creative and interesting person.
This camera is interesting in many ways. It has a tilting screen which is also a touchscreen. It has no shutter button. Instead there are two ways of shooting photos. The first is to push down the ring around the lens which lets you focus and take a shot, the second is to use the touchscreen where you press an area of interest on the screen to focus and take a photo.
So you are probably wondering why would you need this when many mobile phone take great photos. Well, as good as the cameras on the iPhone 5 and Android phones are, they still cannot match the quality of digital cameras in terms of image sharpness, image noise and capturing the tiny details.

The Canon PowerShot N takes great images for a compact camera – even in low-light if you choose to shoot manually by setting the ISO to a low number. As you can see in the photos above, the flash is not overpowering – my face is not bright white – the balance is just right.
Being able to download the images to my phone and iPad is a wonderful feature as it means I can share the photos immediately via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The fact that this is done wirelessly is pretty amazing. No need to look for the fiddly cables. I love this little camera.
